Unit 17: Energy Sources

This unit focuses on the identification of energy sources and their uses. Students will review renewable and nonrenewable sources of energy. There is an emphasis on fossil fuels.

Student Goals

• Determine effects of solar radiation on various materials.
• Identify different energy sources.
• Distinguish between renewable and nonrenewable resources.
• Know how fossil fuels are formed.
• Describe the advantages and disadvantages of several energy sources.

Unit Focus

• Know that layers of energy-rich organic materials have been gradually turned into great coal beds and oil pools (fossil fuels) by the pressure of the overlying earth and that humans burn fossil fuels to release the stored energy as heat and carbon dioxide.
