Overview

Essential Understanding

You can use special geometric tools to make a figure congruent to an original figure without measuring. This method is more accurate than sketching and drawing. It would help if you did not do any measuring for this lesson. A straightedge is a ruler with no markings on it. A compass is a geometric tool used to draw circles and parts of circles called arcs. A construction is a geometric figure drawn using a straightedge and a compass. The links below are virtual construction tools. If you do not have a straightedge and compass, use the following links to do constructions online.

Prepare for Application

You have now studied Basic Constructions. It is now time to demonstrate your learning.

Try the activities below on your own. You should be able to answer these before beginning the practice.

Do these activities in your journal.

Activity 1

Use a straightedge to draw XY¯. Then construct RS¯ so that RS = 2XY.

Activity 2

Activity 2

Use the following diagram for question 1.

  1. Construct F so that mF = 2mB.
  2. How is constructing a congruent angle similar to constructing a congruent segment?

Activity 3

Draw ST¯. Construct its perpendicular bisector.

Activity 4

Draw obtuse XYZ. Draw its bisector YP.
