What You Will Learn

What You Will Learn
  • finding the area of circles, sectors, and segments of circles

Overview

In this lesson, you will learn to find the areas of parts of a circle. You will show your learning by finding the area of circles, sectors, and segments of circles.

Essential Understanding

You can find the area of a circle when you know its radius. You can use the area of a circle to find the area of part of a circle formed by two radii and the arc the radii form when they intersect with the circle.

Prepare for Application

You have now studied Areas of Circles and Sectors. It is now time to demonstrate your learning.

Try the activities below on your own. You should be able to answer these before beginning the practice.

Create a journal extra called 'Unit 10: Lesson 5 activities' and do these activities in your journal.

Activity 1

  1. What is the area of a circular region with a 42-ft diameter?
  2. If the radius of a circle is halved, how does its area change? Explain.

Activity 2

If a circle has a radius of 4 in. What is the area of a sector bounded by a 45° minor arc? Leave your answer in terms of π.

Activity 3

Activity 3

What is the area of the shaded segment shown below? Round your answer to the nearest tenth.
